MEGASKILLS Final Event: commercial video games and the future of soft skills in Europe

On 11 December 2025, MEGASKILLS held its final event in Brussels, with participants joining both in person and online. The event marked the conclusion of the project’s first phase and showcased how commercial video games can be used to train and assess the soft skills increasingly demanded by today’s economy.

Throughout the day, the project team presented the full MEGASKILLS journey, from the definition and selection of soft skills and the development of the skills taxonomy, to the design of assessment methodologies, the implementation of the MEGASKILLS platform, pilot activities, and dissemination efforts. High-level panels brought together perspectives from policy, education, research, and industry, generating strong engagement, thoughtful questions, and fruitful discussions.

The first panel highlighted the growing recognition of transversal soft skills as essential drivers of Europe’s green and digital transitions, competitiveness, and productivity. The discussion underlined that these skills remain relevant across jobs, sectors, and technologies, and that innovative approaches are needed to help learners acquire and demonstrate them. In this context, the MEGASKILLS methodology was presented as a valuable and practical contribution with strong potential for real-world application.

The second panel focused on the role of commercial video games in education and training. Speakers emphasised how game-based environments naturally foster critical thinking, collaboration, strategic planning, time management, adaptability, and resilience. By encouraging experimentation, learning from failure, and continuous improvement, video games offer scalable and sustainable pathways to support soft skill development, challenging common misconceptions and highlighting their positive impact on learner engagement.

Participants also had the opportunity to experience MEGASKILLS hands-on, including interactive activities and live gaming moments during the event.
